Elder Frontier – Day 2 to Day 3: Skill Tree Chapter

“…Uwaa.”

“Wa-fu…”

I found a message floating in my view that said “World News from the Admin,” so I decided to read it.

This is bad.

Has my centipede battle video reached a million views?

Did the admin record it?

Where did they do that!?

This is the worst kind of attention…

No, I’ll deal with my own issues later.

What’s more important right now is—

The fact that the first day was incredibly tough.

The worst part is that there have been suicides.

It’s understandable—some people probably couldn’t accept the idea of being transported to another world and believed in the possibility of logging out, so they chose to take their own lives as an option.

But…

“The risks are too high.”

I don’t think this world is a dream or a game.

Battling monsters using skills.

The sensation of that dangerous woman’s lips.

And now, the soft fur of the fluffy dog pressed against my back.

All of these things feel too real to be anything but reality.

For now, the best thing to do is focus on surviving in this world.

That brings up some problems, though…

“…What should I do about food, shelter, and clothing?”

“Wa-fu.”

My profession, Apothecary, doesn’t seem to be highly regarded in this world’s civilization.

The thick book Elma handed me in the botanical garden dream.

Its item text mentions things like “death penalty” and such.

I thought about throwing it away, but it seems like it’s an important event, or at least that’s the feeling I get.

And more importantly, I’m afraid of Elma, so I’ll just keep it for now.

So, my current situation is like this:

  • I need to secure food, shelter, and clothing. I can’t approach human settlements for now.
  • I need to continue training my skills. I’ll need the strength to fight if monsters or threats come after me.
  • I need to take care of the dog.

That’s where things stand.

Come to think of it, I haven’t eaten anything since yesterday.

I’m normally fine with just one meal a day, but I’m really hungry right now.

I probably need to hydrate, too.

So, I decided to drink some water from the nearby stream.

I know from my knowledge that drinking raw water isn’t the best…

“Poison Resistance” skill activated: You will not suffer from poisoning from food or drink.

~~~~
I’m covered by my skill.
I scoop up some flowing water with my hand and take a sip, then another.
“Wa-fu.”
Lick, lick.
The dog beside me also starts drinking, making little splashing sounds as it laps at the water.
The cold water quenches my thirst.
Yeah, not bad.
But something feels off about this water.
It doesn’t have any smell or taste at all…?
Is water really this tasteless and odorless?
“Wan!”
Well, the dog looks satisfied, so I guess it’s fine.
However, that’s when I ran into a problem.
~~~~

Material Detection I

Effect: You can sense nearby materials. You can also identify if they are edible.

~~~~
I see a faint red glow around me.
I use the Apothecary skill “Material Detection.”
I spot some fruit growing on a shrub and collect it.
It’s a fruit that looks like an apple.
I wash it briefly in the stream and eat it.
Then…
“Huh? It doesn’t taste like anything…”
The coldness of the juicy fruit.
The crisp texture of the fruit.
It definitely feels like it should be a delicious fruit, but it doesn’t taste like anything.
The dog is also happily eating the same fruit in one bite.
“Wan-wan!”
It looks happy… I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the food.
So, I used Material Detection again and gathered all the edible fruits I could find in the nearby forest.
Berries, grapes, starfruit…
I try each one… and…
“—None of them taste like anything…”
